Membership of Council

ASCL Council members are key in setting the direction for the association, as it is Council that determines ASCL’s position on issues and government policy. Council’s 72 representatives are elected as follows:

  • 45 regional Council members are elected from nine regions within England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They represent the views of members within their area and contribute to policy making through Council plenary debates and committee discussion. Regional representatives serve a three-year term, with elections in the autumn for the following September.
  • 18 national Council members are elected to represent all members on national issues. Any member can get in touch with them to discuss broader issues other than those affecting their particular region.National representatives are chosen by the whole membership and elections are held in the spring.
  • Six Council members are elected to represent the views of the independent sector, one Council member is from the special educational needs sector and a further two Council members represent the views of the post-16 education sector.
  • From time to time underrepresented groups are invited to attend Council as either co-opted members or observers. Co-option is also used when individuals have specific expertise not currently available on Council, such as representation on a specific DfE working group.

You can share your views on any matter with your regional Council member, contact details are listed online at www.ascl.org.uk/council
