On the piste? Check the smallprint...

It’s the time of year when thoughts turn to winter get-aways. If you are planning a skiing holiday, it is vital to check that your travel insurance includes cover for winter sports.

Also look out for restrictions – for instance heli-skiing, where a helicopter takes you to a different run, is increasingly popular but often not covered under the terms of a policy.

Watch out for definitions of what ‘off piste’ actually means as this can catch people out and beware of restrictions on ski theft cover – the policy may require that these are separated on ski racks.

Holidaymakers are often understandably disappointed and angry when travel insurance policies don’t pay out for full expenses incurred. Click4quote recently heard of the case of a traveller who claimed for expenses incurred when he broke a leg on the mountain. The policy covered the really expensive parts (the airlift and the medical treatment) but did not pay the taxi fare back following the hospital stay, prompting a complaint.

ASCL’s preferred supplier for travel insurance, Click4quote provides cover for a number of winter sports activities as well as ski packs, ski equipment both owned and hired, and piste and avalanche closure.

One of the benefits of ASCL membership is discounts and special rates on a range of personal and educational products and services. There are healthcare products, online staff well-being systems fi nancial advice and self-evaluation surveys. Check out the full list at www.ascl.org.uk
